J. Vernon McGee on 2 Peter 3:17

McGee: "There is something that we are to know, my friend. Oh, don't be a lazy Christian not learning the Word of God. There is no little gimmick, there is no little course you can take in a week, there is no little program that you can go through that will change and revolutionize your life--there is no easy way. We are to seriously study the entire Word of God, not just a few little verses of Scripture that we throw about and kick around like a football. Peter says, "Ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness." My friend, if you have a comprehensive knowledge of Scripture and apply it to your own life, you will be a steadfast Christian."

Discover Jesus

God gave me this thought the other day that blew my mind...I have been thinking about it ever since then and wanted to put it down in writing to help capture and develop the thought...

The earth is not a product of millions or billions of years of evolution. God created it. Take a moment and look around you, wherever you are. You will see all kinds of things that are made of the materials that God created. And yet, the way you see them now, is not the way that mankind first found them. Adam did not walk around one day and happen to find a leather couch. And consider the technology we have today, none of it is based upon new elements of creation. All of our fancy electronics are made from things that God created “in the beginning.”

God created the earth with elements that have properties that make them useful. It may not be immediately apparent what their use is, but that is the point, God put them there to be discovered.

Think about soap. This is an essential for us. It is hard to imagine life without soap. Yet mankind did not find bars of soap laying around on the ground. So where did soap come from? Early records preserve for us a formula for soap that people were using in Babylon around 2200 B.C. The ingredients were water, alkali, and cassia oil. Soap has advanced over time, and much use, but who first decided to put those ingredients together to make soap? God put those ingredients there to be discovered.

Metal is another fascinating subject to consider. Mankind did not stumble upon iron tools and weapons one day. They were fashioned and crafted. Who first figured out that you can heat it and shape it? Who first learned that metal can be used for farming? Who first found it, since it is buried in the ground? Different kinds of metals were discovered throughout history as man dug, explored, and found uses for the metals. How did that metal get there? God put it there to be discovered.

God designed the earth with these elements that are hidden, waiting to be discovered. Mankind has dug up and examined and experimented and fashioned these discoveries. Today at the grocery store they can ask, “Paper or plastic?” because mankind has discovered and learned that both have properties that make them useful bags. We have clothing, and medicine, and buildings, and pretty much everything else, because God gave us these useful materials. Their usefulness is often not immediately apparent in their raw form, but as mankind examined and experimented, we learned how useful they can be.

This is important and fascinating to me because it parallels our spiritual life. God has revealed Himself to us in a way that we get to discover Him!

Paul tells us in Romans 1 that creation clearly point mankind to the fact that God exists. We may not see a sign that says “God” with a big arrow pointing up, but we do see a world and a universe that tell us there is a God. Majestic redwoods are so tall because they are pointing us to God. The heavens are so vast because they are declaring to us how big God is. The further we explore with the telescope and the deeper we look in the microscope, the more we find the evidence of God’s existence. God has revealed Himself to us in creation in a way that we get to discover Him!

That is not the end of our discoveries. Once we discover that God exists, now we get to discover who He is and what He is like. Through a relationship with God, and reading His Word, and spending time with others who know Him, we discover Him. God said that we would seek Him and find Him when we seek Him with all of our heart (Jeremiah 29:13).

When we seek God and discover Him we also discover His amazing characteristics. What did you first discover about God? His love? Or maybe His forgiveness? His grace or mercy? Paul tells us that it is God’s goodness that leads us to repentance (Romans 2:4). Whatever it was that you discovered about Him, it was not minor. God revealed Himself to you in a way that you needed the most. You were overwhelmed by this amazing discovery of God’s goodness.

That is just the beginning of our discovery of God. Like an explorer landing on the shore of an uncharted territory, there is a vast amount to be explored. A whole continent of discovery awaits. Even more than that when it comes to God, He is so infinite, we get to spend eternity discovering Him. (Ephesians 2:7)

As we begin this journey of discovering God, we learn to hear His voice and we discover a relationship with Him through His Word. We do some digging and find more and more about God. We dig…find forgiveness!!! We dig some more…find grace! Wow! Grace is awesome! We keep digging and digging, discovering more and more about God.

Somewhere along the way, many Christians stop exploring. We say or think things like, “I already read the Bible”, “I’m going to skip this passage”, “I’ve heard that message”, etc. We come to a place where the thrill of discovery is gone, and we feel like we already know what there is to know. We have learned about all the doctrines, listened to so many teachings, served in different capacities, what more could there be?

We need to know that there is so much more. We need that sense of discovery again and the excitement of finding out about this amazing God. God has revealed Himself to us in a way that we get to discover Him, and we have not yet discovered His fullness. The word manifold is a good reminder of this. Manifold speaks of a great number of varieties, or “many folds.” The Bible speaks about God’s manifold mercies (Nehemiah 9:19), His manifold works (Psalm 104:24), His manifold wisdom (Ephesians 3:10), and His manifold grace (1 Peter 4:10).

So you have discovered God’s grace, but really you have only discovered one fold of His grace, and there are many more folds of grace to be discovered. It is so exciting to discover that God’s grace even extends to the situation I am in right now!

If it helps, think about it in terms of the physical world again…The first time mankind discovered metal they did not plan to build an automobile. Maybe a tool, or a chariot wheel. It was only after much time and experience with metal, mankind learned more and more how useful it is.

In the same way, the first time we read a passage, or learn about an element of God’s nature, we have only scratched the surface. Even after much time and experience with the characteristics and nature of God, we have not exhausted the revelation of our infinite God!

God has revealed Himself to us in a way that we get to discover Him! And no matter how long we have been walking with Him, there is still a vast frontier waiting to be discovered. It is exciting and fresh! I want to encourage you to be renewed in that excitement of discovering who God is.

In John 5:39 Jesus said, “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. The Scriptures testify of Him and that is why there is life in the Scriptures. If your devotional time is dead, if the Bible seems lifeless, it is time to discover Jesus again. Take some time today and look to Him with an expectant heart. Expect to discover Jesus. He has revealed Himself to you in such a way that you get to discover Him!

My Funeral Passage

This week I was challenged by Peter, and his commitment to remind his readers about the importance of knowing God and growing in relationship with Him. It was so important to him that he devoted his life to reminding them of the importance of going forward in a relationship with God. He even expressed that he was making preparations so that after he dies that the people will still be reminded of how important it is to know God.

It really struck me, how important it is to remember what God has already revealed. We do not need something new, God has already given us everything we need. God has already revealed in His Word everything that we need.

So I decided that for my funeral service, I want to make arrangements, that those who attend will be reminded of how important it is to know God and keep on growing in a relationship with Him. So, whichever of you have a say in my funeral service when I go to be with Jesus, please make sure that someone gives a solid Bible study of the following passage and remind the attendees that the most important thing for our life is to know God and to know Him in such a way that He is a powerful influence in our lives.

2 Peter 1:1-15
1 ¶ Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,
3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,
4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5 ¶ But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge,
6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness,
7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.
8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.
10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble;
11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
12 ¶ For this reason I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know and are established in the present truth.
13 Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you,
14 knowing that shortly I must put off my tent, just as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me.
15 Moreover I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my decease.

Don't Take A Clear Head For Granted

Today was so refreshing! It was the first time since I hit my head that I was able to teach with a clear head.

That does not mean necessarily that the message I taught was more clear. It is so good to know that God works and speaks, even when I can't think straight. However, it is also so refreshing to be able to understand what I am thinking and sharing.

Last week, after the Sunday evening Truth Project video, my mind was all mush. It was hard to enjoy the video, and as people were asking questions and discussing it afterwards, I could not think straight or comprehend.

Tonight my mind was fully engaged and I was able to enjoy the discussion afterwards. So, I want to thank God and not take a clear head for granted.

To not be able to think for the past couple weeks was a very strange feeling. I knew the thoughts that I wanted to think, but I was just unable to think them. I wanted to think so badly, but I just could not make the connections for it to happen.

I'm glad it is over...and am considering wearing a helmet all the time like Napoleon Dynamite. ;-)

Mild Concussion

Some stories are not enjoyable to repeat over and over...so I'm telling this one here so I don't have to repeat it so much. I got a mild concussion on Saturday morning. How? Not from any manly activities that I could be proud of like a full contact sport or falling off a ladder...Here is what happened...

I walked into the bathroom on Saturday morning, just to throw something away...Kim had Saturday and Monday off, so I had someone cover Sunday's teaching for me so we could enjoy a nice staycation...you know, time off, but you don't get away so you don't spend too much money...

so I walked into the bathroom not paying attention to anything and I was leaning over...when I stood up I slammed my head into the bathroom cabinet. Took out a a chunk of skin, and a few hairs. Here is a blurry picture of the skin and hair that I pulled off the corner of the cabinet...

Everything went white on impact, but I don't think I actually knocked out. It bled a little bit, but not too bad. And then I took a shower and Kim and I went on to enjoy our day together.

Saturday evening I started to feel really weird though...I was nauseous, my hands were shaking and the headache I had all day become more intense. So I did some online research and diagnosed myself with a mild concussion.

I was comfortable with my self-diagnosis until today...my headache has not gone away, though it is more intense some times than others...I feel like there is a heavy brick on top of my head all the time. Thinking is hard, I feel really slow and sluggish, and I get dizzy from time to time. So I thought it wise to get a second opinion.

So I waited two hours and paid $70 for a doctor to tell me the same conclusion I had come to. Mild concussion, these symptoms will last 3-4 weeks as they gradually get better. In the meantime, I am to get lots of rest and avoid alcohol, illegal drugs and activities that could result in another head injury.

Temporary Ending, Eternal Beginning

Pastor Cisco and I were recently asked to perform a memorial service for Frank Stanley. He believed in Jesus, so our purpose in the service was to give the family hope. As Paul said, we sorrow, but not as those who have no hope.

As we were doing the service I was thinking about how we respond to loss and grief. At the church we do services for different seasons of life. Baby dedications, weddings, vow renewals and funerals. For those services, people hire professionals to capture the moments and emotions, but at a funeral service there are no photographers or videographers. People do not want to remember the emotions of grief and loss.

In my experience, most people deal with death like standing on the edge of a cliff. There is a terrifying sensation at the edge of a cliff, and at the same time, the curiosity about what is below. People at a memorial service are often like that. Forced to stand on the edge of a cliff, terrified about it, and wondering what is on the other side of the grave.

Funerals bring us to the edge of eternity and force us to face death and consider what is beyond the grave. It is very uncomfortable for most, but it is reality. We are eternal beings. Consider the following Scripture where Paul speaks about resurrection, comparing our bodies to seeds that are planted.

1 Corinthians 15: 42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption.
43 It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power.
44 It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

Paul uses the example of a seed. The apple tree is grown from an apple seed. The Apple seed does not look like a miniature apple tree. What grows out of the apple seed is completely different, and much better. In the same way, our body is sown, and what comes out of it is much better.

The body before death is corrupt. We are bound to our sinful condition. We experience the breakdown of our bodies with disease, injury, baldness, etc. However, the body after death is raised incorrupt! No more problems, no more sin struggles, no more pain!
Before death is dishonor and weakness. After death, the body is raised in glory and power! Death is the necessary transition from the natural body to the spiritual body.

45 And so it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
46 However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual.
47 The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven.
48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly.
49 And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man.
50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption.

There is so much more to life than what we experience on earth! The natural life is short, but important and necessary, and spiritual life is eternal.
This is so difficult for us because we are limited by these eyes that we have. The problem with our eyes is that they can only see what can be seen. That means that we are attached to the things we can see, we understand and relate to those things well.
Houses, cars, careers, money.

Reality requires faith, because reality is that the things that are eternal are not the things we see, but the things that are unseen. Paul explains this in 2 Corinthians 4. Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God.

For a Christian, death is a benefit, the end of the temporary, the beginning of the eternal. As we stand on the edge of eternity…Paul explains that there is eternal life in Jesus. So we sorrow, but not as those who have no hope. We grieve, but not in despair. God is good, and what He has in store for His children is much better than we can imagine.

Those are my thoughts for the day.

Homeowners Log - 8/13

I have not done an update lately because we had to pause the work at home for a little bit. For two weeks I was caught up in putting in a new sprinkler system for the church. We laid about 1800 feet of pipe, for nine sprinkler lines. It was a whole lot of digging, but the grass is starting to turn green!

Here are a few minor things we have been able to do...
  • Today I picked up a table that we were able to get for $200. Great deal!
  • Tonight I learned how to replace the tubing for the icemaker in the fridge. We are finally able to have the cold water on. Still need to figure out the whole osmosis system that is there.
  • I mowed the lawn on Monday for the first time
Now that the sprinklers are done I am looking forward to getting back to work around the house. My parents may be coming to stay with us, so here are some things we would like to get done in the next couple of weeks.

To Do List:
  • Paint Guest Bedroom
  • Paint Office
  • Paint Guest Bathroom
  • Paint Master Bathroom
  • Fix Broken Sprinkler Line
  • Finish Sanding Kitchen Cabinet Doors & Drawers
  • Paint Kitchen Cabinet Doors & Drawers
  • Hang Blinds In Bedrooms
  • Hang Up New Fan In Living Room
One day we need to get to work on the landscaping and other various outside work...also the garage door needs to be fixed somehow...there are lots more things on our wish list, but we have 30 years or so to work on them. ;-)

Homeowners Log - 7/25

Today we got a few things done around the house...

I scrubbed, scraped and sanded down a few of the cabinet doors. There is so much gook on them! I focused on the ones around the stove and microwave...the buildup of grease was so stubborn! No wonder that stuff clogs up drains! The cabinets have that rounded edge, so the only way to get it off was to scrape it little by little with a small screwdriver. Its stickiness is not unlike the black stuff featured in Spiderman 3. ;-) I think I'll tackle the rest of the cabinet doors and drawers on Monday.

We also hung up in the dining room a big mirror that was given to us. Kim painted our old table (ivory is the new black ;-). And I removed the dining room ceiling fan and hung up the chandelier we got on clearance a while back.

Homeowners Log - 7/24

Note to self...when you have an opportunity to tile an entire house, do not use white grout! We have been able to do a few more big things in the last few days. More and more this house is beginning to feel like home. Still a lot to do...hopefully we can pick up our couch soon and have a real living room.

Wednesday:
We did not do much around the house because of Wed Eve Service.

Thursday:
Kim and her mom painted the dining room, living room and hallway. What an improvement! Kim also painted the fireplace...red brick turned white. We also hung a big mirror over the fireplace, hung vertical blinds over the sliding door, and faux wood blinds in the dining room. I spent the last part of the night scrubbing the tile in the kitchen and dining room.

Friday:
Kim put the final coat and final touches on the fireplace. I scrubbed the tile and grout in the living room and hallway...used a whole can of Comet! We also put some new faceplates on outlets and switches, painted the doorbell cover, and leveled and re-attached the thermostat. We still have yet to unpack hardly anything and have barely touched the other two bedrooms and the landscaping outside. Oh yeah, and the bathrooms need a complete scrubbing. So much to do! Tomorrow I think I will sand down and paint the kitchen cabinet doors and drawers.

The Gains Of Deception

There is no right way to do a wrong thing. But there is a wrong way to do a right thing. I was reminded of this in reading through the account of Jacob and Esau. Do you remember their story? They were the twin boys of Isaac and Rebecca. Isaac favored the firstborn Esau, he was an outdoorsman. Rebecca favored Jacob, he hung out with mom in the tents.

Jacob and Esau had a sibling rivalry from the very beginning. Rebecca was worried because they “struggled together within her”. God said that the twins would become two nations and “the older shall serve the younger.”

Now fast forward to a time when Isaac thinks he is about to die (Genesis 27). He calls Esau to make him some food and then he will bless him and give the inheritance. Esau goes, but Rebecca quickly makes Jacob feel and smell like Esau and sends him in to Isaac to receive the blessing.

They took matters into her own hands. They knew what God said, but it did not look like it was going to happen that way. So they made it happen whatever way they could and Isaac blessed Jacob instead of Esau.

Here is what I found interesting... After all that deception to get the blessing from Isaac, Jacob leaves with only the clothes on his back! After he got the blessing, he feared Esau, so he fled to Haran with nothing! No flocks, no herds, no possessions. They were crafty and deceptive, but the result was the same as if Isaac had blessed Esau!

Many years later Jacob returned and God had blessed him greatly. He had flocks and herds and possessions, but they were not a result of Isaac’s blessing.

The only thing Jacob gained from the deception was hurt and heartache. He never saw his mom again, he missed out on 20 years with his dad, and his relationship with Esau was forever strained. There is no right way to do a wrong thing. Even if you know the end result is what God promised. We hurt ourselves and others when we take matters into our own hands. Do what is right, and let God worry about the end result.

Homeowners Log - 7/22

It has been a few days since I last shared an update on the house. Here is what has been happening the last couple of days.

Sunday - 7/19
We took a day off on Sunday and did no real work on the house. I pushed myself really hard last week, I know some thought it was too much...but it was exactly what God had shown me. The Lord had me share Jeremiah 12:5 several times at several churches in preparation. Along with that the Lord spoke to me from the example of Gideon in Judges 8:4. It was a week of "exhausted, but still in pursuit" to get us into the house. Saturday we stayed the night, and Sunday was our day of rest.

Monday - 7/20
Monday was a lighter day. We put together a new closet, put our bed together, and moved our dresser and night tables into our bedroom. Then we went to my in-laws house and moved ourselves completely out.

Tuesday - 7/21
Today was back to our normal jobs day. I climbed into the big dumpster and did some re-arranging this morning. We had some big pieces that were protruding above the limit line, so I had to get those down in order for them to pick up the dumpster today. When Kim and I got home in the afternoon we made a run to Home Depot to return a few things and pick up some new things. This evening we replaced two A/C vents and hung up vertical blinds in our bedroom. We were finally able to take down the blankets we had stapled up as window coverings! ;-)

We are looking to do a house-warming party on the afternoon of August 1st...so save the day if you are able.

Homeowners Log - 7/18

We got so much accomplished today! Quite a few guys responded to our dumpster day party invitation! We were so blessed, it was super hot today, but the guys came and worked really hard. We actually filled the whole dumpster completely with all the stuff! We threw away a wooden shed, a metal shed, a wooden (solidly built) play house, a pool, and all kinds of other stuff that the previous residents left behind. We still have some more stuff to toss, but it will have to go with our normal trash for the next couple of weeks.

We also got the master bath toilet replaced and shower working. Kim and I were able to bring our mattress in and stay here for the first time tonight!! We still have lots to do, but are so excited to be able to start staying here now and continuing to clean and paint, etc.

Homeowners Log - 7/17

Two thumbs down! Today we had to be completely out of our storage unit, but the house is not ready yet...so we moved everything into the garage for now. I had help for most of the trips from storage, but one of the times I was by myself I had a little accident...I filled the truck with boxes, then bungeed the mattress and box spring flat on top of them.

Going down Indiana a gust of wind threw the box spring up, breaking the bungee cord, leaving the box spring to float in the air while the truck kept going. It did not get much air time though, it crashed to the ground right in front of two cars which narrowly missed it and each other. Whew! I ran to the box spring in the middle of the street and saw a line of cars coming...so I thrust my hands through the mesh on the bottom, grabbed whatever I could, and carried it to the side walk as fast as I could. Can you tell where this is going?

Now on the sidewalk I begin to assess the situation...box spring looks ok...why is there blood on it??? Oh, that would be what is flowing out of my thumb...hey, my other them is gushing too...what a dummy I am! I should say, that now as I type this I know the cuts are not deep, and pretty small, but I did not know that then. I carried the box spring to the truck, holding the sides like a normal person. All the while praying about what to do next.

First things first...I tear up my tshirt and wrap strips around each thumb to put pressure and contain the blood. Wondering, do I need stitches...have to worry about that later. Now what to do with the box spring...can't put it back and repeat it with a broken bungee...can't leave it on the side of the road...praying for wisdom, trying not to panic...finally I realize, the mattress is heavier...so I took off the mattress, put on the box spring, then put the mattress back on top of that.

Praise God there was no serious damage, by the time I got to the house the bleeding had stopped. I was able to get bandages and gloves and finish the rest of the moving out of storage adventure.

Most Beat Tree

Pastor Cisco and I were walking down Lincoln one day and we saw a pomegranate tree right next to the fence. Cisco loves pomegranates, so we asked permission of the owner, climbed up the fence, and got him a few of them. They were hard to reach, we had to tug on the branches, pulling and bending them over to grab the fruit.

I recently heard a similar story about a farmer who had an apple tree on the border of his orchard. Half of the tree's branches hung on his side of the property and the other half hung over the fence. Each autumn as the young boys would start back to school, they would walk under that tree and see those apples. When the apples started to ripen, the boys would beat on that tree with their sticks trying to knock those apples down before the farmer could get them.

The farmer was also watching that tree, and when the fruit started to ripen, he would go out there and beat on that tree so he could get his apples down before the boys did. The farmer said that the tree on the border of his field was the most beat tree in his whole orchard.

Many Christians are like these trees. They live on the border, near the edge of the orchard. And as a result, they are beat. They have enough branches in the world that they cannot be at peace in Christ. They have enough branches in Christ that they cannot be at peace in the world.

Is this tree a picture of your life? The world comes around and beats on you, the Spirit comes convicting you. And there you are in the middle, getting pulled on and beat from both sides. You do not have to be beat in that way. Move yourself away from the border. Fully devote yourself to the Lord and become like the tree in Psalm 1

1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

We're In Escrow Baby!

Kim and I are so excited and blessed! God is so good to us and has opened the door for us to purchase a home in Corona! It has been a long process for us, with many peaks and valleys. During the last four months we have toured about 66 homes, driven by many more, and researched a ton more online. We made offers on about 20 of the homes. Some of them were long processes, others were quick denials, some we had great hopes for, others we just bid on out of desperation.

This home is a miraculous tale of God and His provision! There is so much that went on, I cannot really share it all. But this house fell out of the sky, it was brought to us after it fell out of escrow, we had the first chance to accept it or reject it. After looking at so many homes and making offers and having no real response, suddenly on Thursday the doors blew open and we had three homes to choose from. All of them came on the same day, and all of them were under time constraints and wanted our response immediately.

There were a ton of factors that we were considering with each of the homes...cost, distance, work needed, comfortableness, etc. And we agonized over those things for a full day. I finally decided at the end of the day to sleep on it and make a decision in the morning. Friday morning we made our decision and sent in the paperwork to pursue this house in Corona.

It was built in 1985, it is 3bed, 2 full bath, 954 square feet, 8000 square foot landscaped and tiered lot, great condition and less than a mile from church!

Buying a home is like a long marathon with hurdles for the last 100 yards. It is long and exhausting, and now at the end, we are praying we don't trip on one of the hurdles. We appreciate your continued prayers. We are trying very hard not to get too excited, just in case. But at the same time we are very excited and feel so blessed by God! He is sooooo good!

Keep your eyes out for a house warming party coming soon to a neighborhood near you!

Maturity Analyzer

Maturity Analyzer (Hebrews 5:12-14)

The author of Hebrews gives us a powerful tool here in chapter 5. He gives to us a way of evaluating our spiritual maturity. You would think that a person who has been in church for a while would be mature, but that is not always the case. There needs to be growth, and growth comes from a healthy spiritual diet. Spiritual maturity can be analyzed by looking at the place of milk and solid food in your life.

Milk – Milk is preprocessed food. A mom eats food, her body processes the food, puts the appropriate nutrients into milk and then the baby receives it. Milk is essential for a baby, and without milk the baby will not grow. Milk is also good for older children and adults.

Spiritual milk is preprocessed spiritual food. When we listen to a Bible study, we are receiving milk. The teacher prepared, studied, God spoke to them, they broke it down into an easy-to-digest format and delivered it to us.

Spiritual milk is good for every Christian, but there is a problem when the whole diet is milk. Hebrews 5:13, “For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.” Spiritual food from the radio, church, TV, commentaries and devotional books are all wonderful things, but if that is your whole spiritual diet, then you are immature.

Solid Food – Solid food then is just the opposite of milk. It is not preprocessed food, but food that is processed by your body. You put the food into your mouth, chew it, swallow it, digest it, and your body processes it to abstract the nutrients.

Spiritual solid food is food that you prepare and consume. It happens when you take the time to read the Bible, to meditate on it, consider it, study it, and allow God to speak to you from it. Maturity comes by “reason of use”, so use the Bible as God has called us to.

If your whole spiritual diet comes from others feeding you, the author of Hebrews says you are immature, a babe. If your spiritual diet includes milk, but also includes solid food, congratulations! You are on your way, growing in Christ and coming to spiritual maturity.

Hebrews 5:14, “But solid food belongs to those who are full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

God Will Outdo You

God is bigger than you are. He is smarter than you are. He has more resources, more wisdom, more strength, more power, and much more. And yet, amazingly, this infinite God has chosen to interest Himself in you. The psalmist explains in Psalm 18 that He relates to us according to how we respond to Him. He takes the characteristics we possess and does them better than us, towards us.

Psalm 18:25, With the merciful You will show Yourself merciful; With a blameless man You will show Yourself blameless;

Do you want God to be merciful towards you? The psalmist says, you be merciful and God will show you His mercy. No one can claim they are more merciful than God, His mercies are new every morning!

The word “blameless” means “whole, complete, entire”. Do you want the fullness of God? Be fully devoted to God. As you draw near to Him, He draws near to you (James 4:8). Give yourself completely to God and you will experience the complete plan, purpose and power of God.

Psalm 18:26, With the pure You will show Yourself pure; And with the devious You will show Yourself shrewd.

Have you ever thought God to be impure or unjust in His motives and actions? God will prove that He is pure and holy and righteous to the ones who purify themselves.

There are also those who try to outsmart God. Those who insist on their own way and refuse to listen to Him. They are devious, twisted and cunning. With them, God will show Himself to be even more cunning. No scheme against God will succeed. No plan contrary to Him or His Word will be fulfilled.

God will always outdo you. You want to run like Jonah? God shows you He can run faster. You want to harden your heart like Pharaoh? God shows you that His plans will prevail. Be merciful, blameless and purify yourself, and God will show you how wonderful He really is.
